In this issue, we will share the wonderful time of Mr. Marcial Jesus from the Americas region on the stage of the final. He is the founder/CEO of 100architects, he is young and enthusiastic, and he brings a passionate speech to the scene with a great sense of contrast. He is like a “bullet” ready to fire, eager to bring hot temperatures to everyone. In this wonderful battle, Marcial Jesus won the title of “Young Designer of the Year 2023” at the WYDF Youth Designer Forum.

“100 Architects was founded ten years ago and our headquarters is in Shanghai, but our operations have a global reach. Our company’s mission is essentially developing public spaces that improve the cities and the experience of citizens in the public realm, by creating projects that are accessible to everyone. Not regular public spaces, but what we call Hyper Stimulating public spaces.”

© 100architects

“We do what we call the Hyper stimulating architecture, why is this important? The new generations are experiences seekers, they are exposed to a different way of sensory stimulation, because of that reason, the concept playground has changed, we keep saying that we don’t do playgrounds for kids, we do playgrounds for the city, we do playgrounds for adults.”

© 100architects

“What are the key factors to develop our architecture? The first one is “contrast with this context”, we always design architecture that is extremely contrasting with its context, Another very important thing is “aesthetic independency”, to take recognizable icons or images preexisting in the imaginery of people. Another one is “instant functions” and also obviously to “foster interactions”. What kind of interactions? Digital interactions, physical interactions, interactions among users, social interactions in general.
The last factor is “Fantasy and surprise”: We need to create an inmersive experience because in order to attract, we want the user to think he is inside a video game.”

© 100architects

“Why do we need more playful cities? A better quality of life, more social interactions that at the end of the day, lead to better wellbing. But also there’s this thing called “playful learning” that takes place in the playful learning environment. Where kids and citicens learn collaborative and social skills in a very significant way. I believe that we would all benefit if our cities provided more of this kind of spaces.”

© 100architects

“Therefore, we need to attract people back to the plazas, we need to re-invent the plaza, now we need to compete with an iPad., not only compete, they need to work with technology. How do we do that? We use a lot of creativity, every project needs to become a virtual landmark, every project needs to have a spot for a selfie. This is why we say that the playground concept has changed, now the limits between the play area and the city are blurred, in fact we call it “playscape”, so then the city becomes the playground, and the playground becomes the city, and we all want to play in The city. The city of the future, we believe will have way more playgrounds than the city nowadays.”

“So the point here is that we all want to play in the city, we just need to figure out how people want to play and how different generations want to approach the public space.”

The 2023 WYDF Youth Designer Forum · Global Finals were held, and it wouldn’t be complete without the strong support of various design guests from around the world! They listened to the voices of the youth, offering affirmation and expectations. They provided precise perspectives, engaged in in-depth design discussions with candidates, delving into the future of design. It wasn’t just about each individual work but also about envisioning the future of design.

We invited Mr. Siza Cham, Executive Chairman of WYDF Youth Designers Forum Greater China, and eight authoritative instructors and experts in the field of international interior architecture and design from China, the United States, Italy, Singapore and other countries to form the WYDF2023 international jury. They are: Conway Ma (USA), Carlos Marreiros(Macau, China), Andrea Giordano (Italy), Carlo Beltramelli (Italy), Ricky Wong (Hong Kong, China), Wesley Liu(Hong Kong, China), Shane Ang Chee Sheng (Singapore) and Eric W.Tsay (USA).

Mr. Ricky Wong:

You have designed spaces for the community, including children and adults. However, I am concerned about safety, especially in densely populated areas like China, where children can easily get lost or be at risk of electrical accidents or falls. I did not hear your statement on this issue and would like to discuss it with you.

Marcial Jesus:
“There’s two sides of the question. Project safety, we have a huge procedure going on and we work with the highest standards to make the project safe. The Chinese standards and regulations are very strict and we comply with them in every single project. On the other side, I think the other part of the question was about security, robberies or someone doing something bad to the users. China is a pretty safe place, so in China, honestly speaking not a big concern.”

© 100architects

Mr. Wesley Liu:

I just want to make a statement that I have to be here, I just feel like I have 20 minutes console, there’s so much energy. I believe China needs you, we need you to contribute to our cities. I ‘m always fascinated to see how the foreigners observe Chinese culture and then re interpret it in their own way. And I really love your final statement seeing how you liberates your design to all the world from China. Thank you very much.

Mr. Conway Ma:

I feel your passion through your presentation and through the way you do it, I love it, you can tell by the way I talk now. I talk like you I ‘m influenced, it brings me back to my childhood. But again, throughout all your presentation, I see most of them are very consistent, I hope you can assume (to) mention experimental approach do something different. Looking forward to more of your designs, thank you.

Mr. Shane Ang Chee Sheng:

I really congratulate you about your success in this industry. But you do everything all on like plaza, I would love to see how you translate like interior underground or you know just some my curiosity, thank you.

Marcial Jesus:
“We do have many interiors and other kind of projects. I believe that now the stage of 100 architects is to take all the concepts that we’ve been working in the past five years and take it to a Metropolitan level.
So for example, now we are developing a park that is sixty thousand square meters in Egypt, that it will be a blast.
So, our professional practice, our projects and our skills are not astatic thing, it is constantly changing, it is increasing, it is in motion.”

© 100architects

Mr. Andrea Giordano:

I appreciate especially this work after you say the “competition with digital”. I want to know if you are planning to put the installation, this kind of project onto an historical city, I mean the Italian city that where for example a square is vinculated.

Marcial Jesus:
“I would love to do so. That would be new challenge for us. However I think that our architecture also has many ways to represent itself, to manifest in different ways.”

“So, I think that people look at our designs and they think it would be impossible beside the coliseum (for example).
well, maybe beside the coliseum will take another shape, will take another form, we will use different materials. We will have to adapt.
I said before I believe, this project is in motion. The picture of 100 architects in 3 years I have no idea what is gonna be.
I am ready for the challenge.”
“Thank you”

100ARCHITECTS COLLAB WITH NON-PROFIT SPANISH FOUNDATION, JUEGATERAPIA.ORG

What a great satisfaction it is for 100architects to announce this very special collaboration with Juegaterapia.org for a truly exciting and touching project that aims to help children diagnosed with cancer and undergoing treatment at the Maternal & Child Hospital of Málaga (Spain).

© 100architects

The project was born as an initiative of the Foundation, whose mission is focused on donating fun through quality play and recreation spaces in Hospitals where children with cancer must remain hospitalized during their harsh treatments. Understanding the important role that happiness and the mood of children play in their recovery, this project seeks to generate that true positive and hopeful impact in the recovery process of the children at the Maternal and Child Hospital of Malaga through play and fun.

At 100architects, we are well aware of the important role that PLAY plays in the physical and mental development of children. Thus, our practice and design philosophy always confront the challenges of our projects for public spaces from a very playful and joyful perspective.

However, it wasn’t until Juegaterapia reached out to us and spoke to us about their mission, that we understood what a huge positive impact on hospitalized children and in their recovery process PLAY has demonstrated to have.

The Foundation is currently raising funds for the construction of this amazing project, so if you would like to make a donation to help making it possible, please click this link:

Urban Ripple is a hyper-stimulating urbanscape designed by 100architects around a newly built Exhibition Center in Guangzhou. It features a simple yet striking combinative system of geometrized water ripples, where the main public functions for social interaction are placed, and striped urban corridors resembling the flow of the river while suggesting and encouraging pedestrian circulation. Altogether, the proposal creates a very uncommon and surprising public space, beautifying the surroundings of the Exhibition Center while boosting and stimulating visitors’ senses and experiences in the public realm.

100architects partners with INFYA and Alsayegh Group Of Companies

WORLD-RENOWNED STREET ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN INTERVENTION FIRM, 100ARCHITECTS, AGREES TO AN EXCLUSIVE MIDDLE-EAST PARTNERSHIP WITH EMIRATI-OWNED ARCHITECTURAL BUILD AND DESIGN POWERHOUSE INFYA.

When it comes to bringing color and public immersion into your everyday life surroundings, no one globally is doing it better than 100Architects. Founded in 2013 by Marcial Jesus and based in Shanghai, 100Architects is currently led by 3 Architectural design partners: Javier Gonzalez (Spain), Matias Hernandez (Chile), and Marcial Jesus (Chile).

Having delivered hundreds of projects across the world and having been recognized an array of times by leading architects and thought-leaders for its unique style and ability to create impact, 100Architects believes that working in the public realm is a privilege and that the middle-east is the new playground.

“Play is not only for kids: The city of the future will be a playground for kids & adults alike”

100architects look at themselves as pioneers of hyper-stimulating public spaces. Public Space has undergone almost no innovation in the last 100 years. Urban plazas, squares, and urban spaces for entertainment have indeed gotten more sophisticated and adapted to the current trends and technology. However, these public spaces haven’t given an answer to the revolutions that the world is currently experiencing.

100 Architects believes that nowadays, it’s not enough to simply lay out trees, green areas, benches, and nice lighting features in order to have a truly remarkable public space. Nowadays, the new generations are experience seekers, to the point that they prefer to invest in meaningful and memorable life experiences rather than in owning objects or products.

At 100architects, the team designs playscapes for the city; urban spaces where the cityscape merges with the play area and engages with it creating spaces where the boundaries between the playscape and the rest of the cityscape are not clearly limited. Play is not only for kids as the city becomes everybody’s playground.

In addition, the colors and shapes chosen for all our projects create vibrant environments and instill a sense of joy, attracting people to engage in all sorts of activities. As a result, performing activities in such environments allow people’s dopamine levels to increase, enhancing creative thinking skills. At the same time, the colors and shapes tap on people’s imagination, another factor that paves the way for creative thinking development.

INFYAs role and reach.

The partnership with INFYA provides immediate on-ground, in-person world-class delivery, local knowledge, and finishing. Now into the 5th joint project together, it’s clear having such partnerships work for both organizations, clients, and the cities they are designing and building together.

INFYA the Architectural build and design arm of the Alsayegh group of companies, with offices in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh & Cairo, was founded by Emirati businessman and Chairman Abdullatif Alsayegh and headed up by Group CEO Alex Bendiouis (British).

It consists of Alsayegh Experiential (a mega-scale public event company), Alsayegh a 2-decade-long Media Powerhouse), and INFYA (an architectural, build, fit-out and construction company that is run by MD Jean Oosthuizen (South African).

Being established in the middle east and having delivered some of the biggest projects in all the pre-mentioned verticals, the team was noticing that the desire for “something never seen before” was growing day by day. The need for clients and government developers to stand out in a region that is known for giga projects has never been higher. However, that need is becoming more and more essential for it to be routed in projects that add to the value of life and add to the goals of making cities and places to live in the middle east a life choice rather than work driven choice.

Why Now?
“Just look around us. It’s all happening.”

The Dubai Urban Master Plan 2040, draws inspiration from international best practices to create conditions for sustainable prosperity and create a more inclusive environment that meets the needs of the city’s diverse population and enables people to realize their creative and innovative potential to the huge.

The massive push that Sharjah-based private or government-owned entities like the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq) in mega projects across the emirate such as the ongoing Khor Fakkan rejuvenation is another testimony to the overall mindset shift in making the middle east cities a new playground.

And for Saudi, it doesn’t take much to notice the huge development drive with new cities like the giga project of Neom or the Red Sea development program.

As the Middle East construction industry navigates its post-pandemic recovery, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) is being crowned as the region’s leading construction market due to several factors such as data trends, growing investor interest, and the country’s long-term commitment to bolstering construction efforts.

According to data from Trade Arabia, the Saudi construction market is forecasted to perform well in 2022 as its initial value was already at 37 billion USD only two years prior. Given that the sector also registered an estimated CAGR of 5.2% for the period 2021 to 2026, the Saudi Arabian construction industry is exhibiting promising potential.

Urban regeneration approach
By 2050, 2/3 of the world’s population will be living in cities, so through our projects, we seek to enhance the sense of community to get people to love and respect their immediate environments and public spaces, as a small contribution towards getting to love and respect the Earth and achieve a swift from degradation to regeneration.

Regenerative development is not developing more buildings but developing new potentials, through education and the enhancement of empathy, well-being, and the improvement of health in urban environments.

The Chain Effect

The Chain Effect, our project in collaboration with Anomaly Shanghai, has been awarded with one of the most sought-after design awards in the world, the Red Dot Design Award 2018 on the category of Environmental Graphics.

The Chain Effect is a public space intervention within the framework of Shanghai’s Urban Design Festival hosted in 2017, and powered by MINI China through its platform Urban Matters, which curates and creates design solutions that tackle urban challenges confronting China’s creative class.

Urban Matters

The Urban Design Festival is an ongoing event in Shanghai aiming to identify urban issues derived from modern daily life style, and seeking to create interesting design solutions to solve them.

The “modern urban issue” to be tackled by the collaborative duet Anomaly + 100 Architects was to improve the pedestrian circulation in old neighborhoods of the city, where sidewalks are narrow and usually massively occupied by bicycles and scooters parked on them, and where zebra crossings are congested with people.

Anomaly + 100 Architects

The issue to be tackled was the bicycle parking congestion due to the proliferation of bicycles from the booming bike-sharing companies like Mobike or Ofo in Shanghai and China in general, which has created a new problem in the narrow sidewalks of the city, hindering the circulation of pedestrians.

Congested bike parking

Cogested bike parking

Inspired by the chain of a bicycle, we came up with a simple yet creative graphic that would indicate the users the positions to park the bikes and also suggest in which angle they should be parked, optimizing the accommodation of more bikes in certain areas and freeing up 0,5 meters of sidewalk for a more comfortable pedestrian circulation.
